  26. contains 15 nation factfiles, each one
  27. representing a European

  29. containing vital information about each
  30. one. As this is an interactive
  31. presentation you can 
  32. call up extra
  33. information on a country by just clicking
  34. on-screen buttons. This program also contains
  35. information on the organisations of Europe,and
  36. some other features. It was produced by David
  37. White using Gold Disks

  41. HOW TO USE THE HYPERBOOK SYSTEM
  42. Using the Hyperbook system couldn't be easier. At the
  43. top of each page in the book is a panel containing six
  44. buttons. Clicking on one of these with the left mouse
  45. button will perform it's function. The first button on
  46. the panel will move you back to the previous page in
  47. the book. Clicking the next button will move you to the
  48. next page in the book. The third button will bring you
  49. back to the first page in the book. The fourth button
  50. will bring you to the very last page in the book. The
  51. fifth button will move you to the last page you were
  52. on. The last button will present you with a table of
  53. contents. Clicking on a page here will bring you to it.

  1493. 5th of May 1949. It aims to achieve a greater unity
  1494. between its members to safeguard their common
  1495. European heritage and to facilitate their economic
  1496. and social progress.

  1500. of the rule of law and of the enjoyment by
  1501. all persons within their jurisdiction of

  1532. The WEU was founded on 17 March 1948 with the
  1533. original intention of collaborating`in economic,social
  1534. and cultural matters and for collective self-defence`.

  1537. 1984 the WEU was reactivated to improve military
  1538. cooperation between members and to help them

  1547. The EFTA aims to achieve free trade in industrial
  1548. goods between member states, to help create a single
  1549. West European market and to encourage an expansion
  1550. in world trade. The first aim was met in December
  1551. 1966 when nearly all internal tariffs on industrial
  1552. goods were abolished. Considerable progress was
  1553. made towards the second aim in April 1984 when
  1554. trade agreements with the EC abolished tariffs on
  1555. industrial goods between EFTA ana EC countries

  1579. The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)
  1580. NATO, an idea first broached by the Secretary of
  1581. State for External Affairs for Canada on 28 April
  1582. 1949 and came into force on 24 August 1949. NATO is
  1583. often called the Western Alliance.
  1584. The North Atlantic Council is the highest
  1585. authority of the alliance. It comprises of 16
  1586. permanment representatives-one from each member
  1587. state-and is chaired by the Secretary General of
  1588. NATO. 
  1589. The defence of the NATO area is the responsibity
  1590. of the Defence Planning Committee. France is not a
  1591. member of the DPC, which meets regularly at
  1592. ambassadorial level and twice a year at ministerial

  1716. The European flag consists of twelve gold stars on a blue
  1717. background. Contary to popular belief, these do not stand for
  1718. the twelve members of the EC, but represent symmetry and
  1719. harmony. It is the offical flag of the Council of Europe since
  1720. 1955 and the EC since 1986. It is the only flag that can really
  1721. be called
  1722. the true "Flag of Europe".
